Handmaids Holy Child Juniorate was established on 22nd January 1988 with an initial number of sixty six students. Sister Maria Perpetua Azumara started the school with seven teachers. She was succeeded by Sr. Bibiana Okoro as principal from 1996-2008, Sr. Martha Kalu served from 2008-2014, and currently Sr. Clarice Chinaemerem Orji is the principal till date.
The Juniorate was established to train girls who wish to embrace the religious life by giving them sound moral training an inculcating in them rich Christian values for their future life. Although this Juniorate started at the time the diocese of Ahiara was created in 1988, all negotiations pertaining to its establishment were concluded b y His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Mark Unegbu, the then bishop of Owerri Diocese. The establish of the Juniorate in Amumara was the brain child of Mother Gertrude Waturuocha, and the vital roles played by Mother Mary Joseph Okpo and Sr. Evangeline Enyi. The pioneer principal encountered numerous challenges at the initial stage of the school which she eventually surmounted.
Through the fatherly support of Bishop Mark Unegbu and the assistance of Most Rev. Dr. V. A. Chikwe, Sr. Maria Perpetua scaled through the initial obstacles and nurtured the school from infancy to maturity. Today we celebrate twenty five years of the growth and development of the school. There has been remarkable development in the school during these years in various aspects.
The school that started in a one-storey building, housing the classrooms, staff room, library, Principal’s and bursar’s offices, has now added a new two-storey building complex that is housing two examination halls for JSS 3 and SS 3 students, staff rooms, Library, computer lab, and other offices. Now the school has a hostel complex that can accommodate over 600 students. There is also a befitting Chapel. We also have kitchen and a well equipped science laboratory block. The old abandoned women trade center has been transformed into a beautiful Juniorate school.
